The Variety Playhouse marquis shows a dub show by a lineup of Georgia-area dub reggae superstars Dubconscious, Cadillac Jones, and Sea Dub. Looks like the photo was taken from the Dubconscious release party for their 2009 release of NonViolent.
As the article explains:
A music man, the store owner likes to take in a show at the Variety Playhouse, ‘‘a cool venue in Little Five Points that features a wide range of great music, from Steve Earle to Gnarls Barkley to Daniel Johnston.’’ Go to variety-playhouse.com.
So what does this mean? Is dub reggae finally fashionable?

Yesterday DubConscious announced the release of their 5th studio album, NonViolent. The title was initially inspired by Marshall Rosenberg's work on "nonviolent communication" and grew to include concepts from nonviolent leaders, thinkers, & activists such as Ghandi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and others. The band reports that they hope "to bring our own awareness back to this concept in an attempt to find peace, politically, socially, & otherwise."
In partnership with Sound Tribe Sector Nine's 1320 records, DubConscious plans to support conservation of world resources by planning a green release for both digital and hard copy of the album. To purchase the album online, the greenest of options, visit 1320records.com and get 4 bonus tracks included with your download (not available on CD).
As an additional concept, people who want to purchase the album from the band's tour can choose between a physical album or a download seedcard. Seedcards for the album come decorated with album art, printed with a download code, and after downloading the music can be planted to grow wildflowers that help sustain a dwindling honey bee population! The physical CD's are sans plastic wrap, packaged with recycled cardboard, and printed with soy-based ink.

The official cover art for Dubconscious's new album, NonViolent, released yesterday.
The illustration is by David Hale and the album cover layout was done by Jordan Noel.
Dubconscious celebrates the release of their newest album "NonViolent," engineered and produced by Grammy-winner Robert Hannon on 1320 Records.
A release party is scheduled for Januaray 23, 2009, at the historic Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta Funk heroes Cadillac Jones and Athens GA's top DubStep DJ SeaDub support.
Hailed as a unique world music psychedelic dub reggae collective from Athens, GA, Dubconscious mixes classic dub reggae rhythms, harmonies, studio techniques, and spirituality of artists such as King Tubby, Augustus Pablo, and The Gladiators with strong vocal harmonies and lyrical concepts of awareness and progress to become one of the most anticipated world music bands touring the United States.
Formed in 2002, Dubconscious has released 5 studio albums including:
Outside of the studio, Dubconscious can be seen in many top music festivals, including Bonnaroo, Langerado, Wakarusa and 10,000 Lakes, performing with some of contemporaries like Mad Professor and Michael Franti.
The band includes Adrian Zelski, vocalist and guitar; James Keane, vocals and guitar; Matt Woolley, drums and vocals; Jerry Hendelberg, keyboards, melodica, and vocals; Scott Pridgen, tablas and percussion; and Solomon Wright, bass, trumpet, and vocals.
One of Dubconscious' most sacred mantras is: "Be the change you wish to see in the world." The band does their best to represent those ideals by using bio-diesel fuel, recycling, selling organic merchandise and educating fans about critical issues. All merchandise items are crafted from organic materials, promotional tools such as posters and handbills are all created from post consumer waste/PMW materials and printed with soy based inks, and special attention is paid to offsetting the carbon emissions from touring. Every mile, every hotel room, every plane flight, and even the electricity used to power their production is offset through their partnership with Green Mountain Energy Company and Sustainable Waves.
"The genuine practice of nonviolence is still somewhat experimental on our planet, but its pursuit, based on love and understanding, is sacred. If this experiment succeeds, it can open the way to a far more peaceful world in the next century." -Dalai Lama

Dubconscious is heading North! The Northeast will get a taste of the South this fall when Dubconscious makes their way up the East Coast for their first ever trip through New England. They'll be announcing a slew of Northeastern dates in the coming weeks on the Dubconscious tour page.
"We're excited to be able to finally bring our unique style of music to the region, so if you're into having a positive time, then tell your friends and start getting ready!" explains the band.
At the time of this writing, the tour dates include the following (please double-check the band's tour dates page to confirm):
Dubconscious, my brother’s reggae band, is touring through NYC and playing at Sullivan Hall on Wednesday October 1st. If you’re interested, please join us and meet my cooler, balder, far-mellower brother. They're building a following around their socially-conscious reggae/jam band style and have played shows and smoked bowls with The Wailers, Burning Spear, Easy Star AllStars, Mad Professor, etc.
Glide Magazine writer Jamie Lee describes the band's beginnings: "In 2003, Dubconscious released its debut offering, Word of Life, which received ample response and exposed the rootsy foundation from which the band's live forays grow. Two years later, the group followed up with The American Dream, a sprawling, 21-song collection bolstered by intoxicating dub, socially conscious lyrics, and a feel-good vibe that has made the band a hit on the club scene across the southeast."
Valley Planet writer Jennifer Daniel encourages reggae fans to "turn it off - your television that is - and tune in to Dubconscious, the Athens, Ga.-based reggae sextet. Rouse the Rasta within and heighten your social senses while celebrating." She goes on to explain that "progressive reggae in the Lee 'Scratch' Perry category, combined with the social drive of Burning Spear, set this young reggae ensemble apart from their contemporaries."
The show opens at 730 and Dubconscious goes on around 10. Tickets are $10. Show info is at http://www.sullivanhallnyc.com/artists/dubconscious.htm.
Band info is at http://www.dubconscious.com.
Hope to see you there!
Hot off the success of their New Year's ReSolution:Solution concert, Dubconscious has announced many 2008 tour dates. In their most recent newsletter, the band announces:
"As we finish up the album, NonViolent, in the studio, we'll be hitting the road on the weekends all around the SouthEast. As the album release gets closer, we'll be hitting the road hard in the Spring. Keep an eye on our calendar on MySpace and the web as the dates start filling in."
Here are the latest tour dates.

Just in From Dubconscious :
How do we resolve to make the world a better place in 2008? That will be the question and the theme for this New Year's Eve as The Georgia Theatre and All-In-Compass present DubConscious with the amazing Asheville dub/downtempo trio, Telepath , on Monday, December 31st for an over the top celebration entitled ReSolution:Solution.
We're ringing in the New Year with a theme of solution-based philosophies such as sustainability and nonviolent communication. Local musicians Carl Lindberg (Squat, Grogus), Shelley Olin (Lotus) and Jonathan Lloyd (Cadillac Jones) will be joining the sounds of DubC that night, and some live VJ action, a tasteful light show, and performance painters, Catherine Stinson ( www.catherinestinson.com ) and David Hale ( www.davidhale.org ) will be filling out the stage for what is sure to be an unbelievable and memorable countdown to 2008.
