  • Keith Richards 1998 Playboy in Keith Richards 1998 Playboy interview

    • From: wingless_angels
    • Description:

PLAYBOY: A different subject: Keith Richards, the producer. You have just produced a record with the Wingless Angels. How did this come into existence?

RICHARDS: It was pure coincidence, totally unplanned. After the "Voodoo Lounge" tour, I wanted to go on holiday, to my house in Jamaica. I deserved that. Hanging around with the brothers for a while, smoking a bit, playing a bit, all those things you do on a little paradise island. I've known the guys since 1971 or 1972. They're from a Rastafarian town. We met on the beach. They didn't know anything about the Stones and all the fuss. It was great, because I was able to keep my anonymity. They watched and heard me play the guitar and invited me over. This music, someone from Africa once said, is more African than African music itself. It's been surviving there in the jungle hills for hundreds of years without influences from the outside. Voices, drums, that's it. Without planning anything, we started playing for fun. They brought the drums into my house and I was utterly fascinated with the beauty of this music. One night, we went in my Range Rover to the studio in Kingston, 15 Rastas with their drums. And I knew instantly - that won't work. You can't put them in a sterile studio. It's too regulated. Well, we thought, then we'll keep it to ourselves. Not for the public!

PLAYBOY: And how did the story go on?

RICHARDS: Very mysteriously. As I said, in 1995, after the "Voodoo Lounge" tour, I was in Jamaica. I met the guys again and a representative of the Jamaican Film Board heard one of our sessions. That's got to be recorded, he said, and I told him about the unsuccessful attempt a few years ago. A few days later, a mobile recording studio showed up in front of my house - a "present" from the man from the Film Board. Well, fine, but who was supposed to operate the equipment? The next day, there's a knock on my door, and the only person in the world who could record something like this, stood there in front of me - Rob Faboni, who had got married in Jamaica, and who knew the guys. It was really strange. It dawned on me that my holiday would be entirely canceled, and that some secret forces somewhere had become active. My house was turned into a studio: drums, microphones, cables etc. After a month, about halfway through the project, Chris Blackwell (the founder of Island Records and who initiated the worldwide success of reggae music) appeared and said: "Once you've finished recording, I would be delighted to release the record!" This was when I knew: "Hey, we're really doing some work here."

PLAYBOY: You did play the guitar for this production, didn't you?

RICHARDS: Yes, I found that to be a very special honor. Normally, all instruments, apart from the drums, are an absolute no-no for these serious Rasta songs. But the boys insisted on me taking part in it. We then went to New York with the basic recordings and I wondered what other instrumental elements could be added at all. I could think of only one person who would fit in: Frankie Gavin, an Irishman, who masters about any instrument you can possibly think of: violin, concertina, flutes and many others. He is the sort of person who can play with Peruvian musicians just as well as with Irish folk groups or Hungarian Gypsies. All of a sudden, there was a knock on my door and Frankie Gavin stood outside, asking me, "I happened to be in town and I wonder whether you've got some work for me?" Everything just fell into place. Jah had a hand in it. I knew then who I was working for (laughs).

    • From: wingless_angels
    • Description:

Anybody know where this first appeared?

Wingless Angels - Island Jamaica/ Mindless Records

Having put aside their differences, or perhaps having been lured by the money involved, Jagger/Richards took the Rolling Stones show on the road again a few years ago in support of the 'Steel Wheels' album, and again two years later for the 'Voodoo Lounge' disc. The weak 'Bridges to Babylon' (which sounds like a Mick Jagger solo album, but not as hip) means they're at it again.

Now let's be clear about this, there probably isn't a bigger Stones fan on this campus, but even I will admit that it's been a good twenty years since they put out anything genuinely above par (1976's 'Some Girls'). Then again I will also maintain, and this is the tricky part, that Keith Richards has always been the stable cog in the machine.

His contributions to Dylan, Tom Waits, Snooky Pryor, and Chuck Berry pianist Johnny Johnson, as well as his solo output have always been good at worst and exquisite at best. He forges a path back to his roots with the same conviction, determination and religious zeal he held back in 1963, when he and Brian Jones unearthed gems by Slim Harpo, aforementioned Chuck Berry and Howlin' Wolf.

Which brings me to the 'Wingless Angels' album. As you're having visions of the Stones caravan trekking across the world this year, driving 25 mph, the left tail-light oddly flashing, and Hell's Angels patrolling the crowds 'politely' enticing people to switch from AT&T to Sprint telephone deals, put on the Wingless Angels album and reconsider.

As we watch the Stones travel the world like some dear friends who went a little funny a while back, Keith seems the only one who remembered to drop us a postcard from time to time to let us know what's up.

The Wingless Angels is a Jamaican entourage of singers and drummers of which Richards is really only one part; the self-styled "albino member of the group". His part of the bargain was to co-produce the album, provide the recording facility at his Jamaican house, and add the odd-bit of guitar, bass, piano and voice where needed.

If you're expecting a slick and produced bit of plastic, be prepared. Keith plays Alan Lomax here, only this time the field-recordings document a coupla hundred years of Jamaican heritage instead of Afro-American folk. This means that we not only get strong African roots, but also the influence of the Wesleyean hymns of the Pentecostal missionaries that, at one point, helped shape Jamaica (here they are nicely aided by Frankie Gavin's flurries of violin, accordion and tin whistle). Traditional chants such as 'On Mount Zion I' and 'Roll Jordan Roll' find themselves alongside more recent standards including 'Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think)' and 'Rivers of Babylon'. The undercurrent on all of them is provided by the exquisite sounding drums and a fair share of dub-style bass.

The drums, in a sense, are the heart of every song. The other focus is the vocals, but even they are led by the sluggish, entrancing rhythm of the deep, booming hand drums. Pumping and rolling, they mimic the rhythm of the heart, letting the sixteen songs meld together as one epic soulful journey.

Recorded at night, and outside you can actually hear the crickets in the background, along with the in-between-song banter and laughter. The 'Wingless Angels', because "they sing like angels, yet can't fly", nevertheless soar.

A labour of love by all involved, several listens are required for every subtle detail to reveal itself. Like Brian Jones' "Pipers of Joujouka" nearly thirty years ago, or the more recent Ry Cooder "Buena Vista Social Club" series, it is a pleasant experience to find a well established artist taking such great care, and showing such humility, in preserving ethnic folklore. More to the point, the man is clearly in love with these songs and musicians.

'Wingless Angels' seems to accurately capture the spirit in which it was made. Old friends together again for an all-night jam. Richards sitting quietly in a corner playing any old instrument, no doubt grinning. As the spirit fills the room, every musician can feel it, and they are bonded by the moment...a herbal cigarette does the rounds, a knowing smile is exchanged, and the drums start up again. Dawn, when it comes, will be both beautiful and unexpected. -Hjalmar Tjan

My Name is Mitch Malasky and I am the managing partner at SumofChange.com, a blog dedicated to socially, politically, and culturally conscious media. We are beginning a new weekly post, called 'Music Monday' where we analyze some aspect of music, beginning with a comparative history of Ska music.  We will be sharing little tidbits of musical magic that we come across from the annals of music history to the streets of DC (and wherever else we can afford to travel).  We will write about everything from local performances and new groups, to past artists and albums, to researched explanations and analysis of styles, which is where our first post comes from.  In it I give a brief history of the three waves of Ska and compare the them using three versions of the song, "Carry, Go, Bring, Come", one from each wave.  i hope you get a chance to read the post and I hope that you will check back to SumofChange.com (at least) every Monday for more.  Please feel free to email us at info@SumofChange.com with questions/comments/critiques.  Thank you very much and I hope you enjoy our Music Mondays

CAUTION : These sounds are extremely habit forming.
The East Coast Dub Cartel is a coalition of the east coast's best reggae, ska, dub and rock steady artists. The Cartel was organized by P.Dub of Predator Dub Assassins, who created this series of recordings to showcase some of the brightest talents and most interesting faces of the genre.
The distinct sound of the album may be familiar to those familiar with Predator Dub Assassins as Dub Assassins front man P.Dub handles the writing and production and plays multiple instruments on the tracks. Though each artist has their own unique style, this lends a warm cohesiveness to the CD. The recordings were engineered at the Dub Shack utilizing session band The Dub Smugglers who both augment the bands that appear, and also provide an excellent backing to the solo artists. Members of the Dub Assassins also appear on many of the tracks.
      Known Dub Cartel members include:
Predator Dub Assassins : Hard and dangerous. Responsible for numerous musical killings.
Inspecter 7 : Back on wax after 10 years. Known to move freely in U.S. ska underground.
Tommi Infamous : Trained in the lethal art of the Dee Jay. Smuggles lyrics by the ton. Approach with extreme caution.
King Django : Reputed boss in large ska smuggling ring. Faces charges for his involvement in 5 Tons of Ska flooding international markets.
Barry and the Penetrators : Extremely brazen multiple offenders. Punk, ska, reggae and dub. These guys have been on the run for a long time.
Tiffany Sterling : Do not be fooled by appearances. The feminine exterior masks lethal MC skills and unmatched vocal talent. Known to carry a high caliber concert flute.
Roy Radics : International musical criminal hailing from North London, U.K. Last spotted with notorious ska/reggae gang The Rudie Crew.
Master Timo Scott : Radical dub poet and bass player with Predator Dub Assassins. Wanted for a slew of offenses. Shows a concern for the disenfranchised. Must be stopped at all costs.
Ronnie Rude : Suspected of conspiring with The Dub Smugglers to unleash an extremely potent brand of rock steady onto the streets. Forget the baby face. This guy is bad, bad news.
"Pistol" Pete Creekmore : Dangerous instrumentalist last known to be hiding among the notorious Silver Dollar group. Specializes in saxophone ambush. Does not use a silencer.
Stringbean & the Stalkers : Masters of disguise. These guys have been known in the past to deal mainly in blues, but their recent move into raw uncut reggae has authorities highly concerned.
Keep on the lookout for these artists and report sightings of the East Coast Dub Cartel to the proper authorities.
